David Hockney

This "BOOSTER" as Dave would put
it is actually one of the most influential artists of the twentienth century, having had a big part in British pop art movement in the 60's.
Whilst Hockney is well known for his paintings it is his lens based work that i find most appealing . A technique Hockney was very fond of was joiners, where as the name suggests you join a number of photos together to create one image.
In my opinion his best work was his composite polaroids shown below.

Plan @ Robert Mann Gallery

Plan is one of the most significant contemporary art projects to emerge from Poland. Over the course of two years, Aneta Grzeszykowska and Jan Smaga created a series of ten highly unusual photographic prints: each piece documents the entirety of an apartment, including its occupants, from a normally unavailable perspective — from above. Hundreds of individual photographs are processed and merged using computers to produce the finished piece. In his essay on Grzeszykowska and Smaga's work, Marek Krajewski marvels at the "perfection, continuity, and completeness of representation — unimaginable in traditional photography."

The clinical detachment that seems, at first glance, to characterize the Plan series gives way to a fascinating sociological study of human domestic life. The viewer becomes not only a voyeur, but also an anthropologist, making new discoveries within each image the more it is studied from above. The dizzying complexity of daily existence is exposed, allowing us to recognize what we have in common, but also what makes us unique. Ultimately, this "X-ray of privacy" is "a simple story about life, which consists of an infinite amount of elements and details, as well as the sheer pleasure of perceiving them."

Aneta Grzeszykowska and Jan Smaga were born in 1974 and graduated from the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. They both live and work in Warsaw, Poland.

This exhibition is co-presented with the Refectory Leeds.

Rephotography is the act of repeat photography of the same site, with a time lag between the two images; a "then and now" view of a particular area. Some are casual, usually taken from the same view point but without regard to season, lens coverage or framing. Some are very precise and involve a careful study of the original image. The founding work in this style was the Rephotographic Survey project, conceived in 1977 by the project's chief photographer, Mark Klett. This project engaged 120 sites of government survey photographs from the American west first recorded in the 1870's. The resulting book, Second View, The Rephotographic Survey Project, included precise rephotographs of the same locations 100 years later along with an essay by Klett on the methodology and problems encountered with rephotography. Klett revisited these sites a third time for his 2005 book Third View with a new team of photographers including Byron Wolfe, Michael Marshall and Toshi Ueshina.

The accurate rephotographer needs to determine several facts before taking a new image. An important starting point is the choice of the older image. It's usually a good idea to show continuity between the two images by including in the frame a building or other object which is still there in the modern view. Some urban scenes change so much that the original buildings shown have been completely obscured by subsequent skyscrapers, or have been demolished. A "then and now" photograph could be taken but there would be nothing in common to link the two images.

Over the course of eighteen years, Mark Story photographed people who had lived past the ripe old age of 100.

Rune Olson

Since graduating from the prestigious Goldsmith College in London, Rune Olsen has explored making sculpture by using what he calls "social materials." These are materials readily available, such as newspaper and tape; he then covers the surface of the sculptures in expressive drawn markings. His work has been reviewed in Sculpture Magazine, Boston Globe, Austin Chronicle, New York Times, and Star Ledger, where Dan Bischoff writes: "…The materials and that description do not prepare you for the extraordinary presence of the pieces…"

He is a member of Sculptors Guild in USA and several arts organizations in Norway, where he was a founding member of Atelier G9, a gallery with studios in Oslo. Rune Olsen has won 11 awards from The Norwegian Government, including the Emerging grant in 1997, the Establishing grant in 1999 and from 2003-2006 a distinguished Three-year work grant for young and emerging artists. Based on his extraordinary sculptures, he was in 2005 awarded the New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship and a 6 months studio residency with Artist Alliance in New York. In 2006 Rune Olsen was awarded a place at the renowned Art Omi International Artists Residency. Rune Olsen is currently having a solo show with Samson Projects in Boston.

So we start the new year with new objectives and goals? i finally decided to set up a personal blogspot to possibly (maybe) try and keep track or a record of my days, not as such a diary but just a good way to communicate to everyone which i guess is exactly why blogspot was created?
okay so im about 2 hours late in posting this but ive only just got back to the flat and with my sleeping problems i thought id use this time wisely and update this blog, basically this blog will contain alot of images from my day proberly all taken on my iphone, or otherwise stated when i can be bothered to take out my slr, 120 or polariod. It will proberly include alot of information which i find interesting and ill also put up music for everyone to download, maybe not to everyones interest but you can just ignore it!
So to start off heres some pictures of today/tonight...firstly which was the first day back to leeds education then going onto Hollys 21st birthday!
(also im quite new to blogspot and im not to sure how to use it proberly yet so these images are in a really random order! i think its from finish to start)
